Services

We offer a broad range of Nephrology Services including investigation, diagnosis and management of the following conditions:

Chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) means your kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood the way they should. The disease is called “chronic” because the damage to your kidneys happens slowly over a long period of time. .

Acute kidney disease

A sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days. AKI causes a build-up of waste products in your blood and makes it hard for your kidneys to keep the right balance of fluid in your body..

Nephritic syndrome

The nephritic syndrome is a clinical syndrome that presents as hematuria, elevated blood pressure, decreased urine output, and edema. The major underlying pathology is inflammation of the glomerulus that results in nephritic syndrome..

Persistent microscopic hematuria

Persistent troublesome macroscopic haematuria. In some patients macroscopic haematuria persists despite negative initial investigations. In these patients further investigations may be required including renal. arteriography, retrograde ureterography, cystoscopy and biopsy and occasionally ureteroscopy..

Polycystic kidney disease

Polycystic kidney disease is a disorder that affects the kidneys and other organs. Clusters of fluid-filled sacs, called cysts, develop in the kidneys and interfere with their ability to filter waste products from the blood. The growth of cysts causes the kidneys to become enlarged and can lead to kidney failure.

Lupus nephritis

Lupus nephritis is inflammation of the kidney that is caused by systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Also called lupus, SLE is an autoimmune disease. With lupus, the body's immune system targets its own body tissues. Lupus nephritis happens when lupus involves the kidneys.

Uncontrolled Hypertension

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

Hypertensive nephropathy

Nephrosclerosis, hardening of the walls of the small arteries and arterioles (small arteries that convey blood from arteries to the even smaller capillaries) of the kidney. This condition is caused by hypertension (high blood pressure).

Kidney stone diseases

Kidney stones (also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones.

Kidney transplants work

During kidney transplant surgery, the donor kidney is placed in your lower abdomen. Blood vessels of the new kidney are attached to blood vessels in the lower part of your abdomen, just above one of your legs. The new kidney's urine tube (ureter) is connected to your bladder

Hemodialysis

hemodialysis is a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney, or a dialyzer, are used to clean your blood. To get your blood into the dialyzer, the doctor needs to make an access, or entrance, into your blood vessels.

Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis which uses the peritoneum in a person's abdomen as the membrane through which fluid and dissolved substances are exchanged with the blood. It is used to remove excess fluid, correct electrolyte problems, and remove toxins in those with kidney failure

Patient Treatment Procedure

BP & Kidney specialists is a referral clinic. We encourage people to first see their General practitioner, who may then refer them to our clinic. We do however accept self referrals.

Assesment

In assessing if you have kidney disease and what may be causing it, we would normally do a series of blood tests and urine tests. If necessary you may need a kidney biopsy. This involves putting a needle into the kidney while you lie on your tummy. It is done under ultrasound guidance and local anesthetic. A small sample of your kidney is then taken for further analysis in a laboratory. Further guidance will be given to your doctor, based on what the results are showing.

Advanced Kidney Problems

Some patients present with advanced kidney diseases . Their kidneys are no longer able to function well, which impacts on their wellbeing. They therefore need to be started on treatments that can do the work of their own kidneys. These treatments are known as renal replacement therapies. They include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant. Your doctor may refer you because they fear you will need to start these treatments soon..

Specialist Treatment

Some patients have difficult to manage kidney disease or blood treasure. They therefore need to be managed by a specialist. Once stable they may be referred back to their general practitioner.Once it’s determined that you have kidney disease, it’s important that you learn about your condition. Kidney disease is one of the few diseases that can be managed. You play a crucial role in maintaining your kidney function.

Reasons a Doctor may refer you to our clinic

CKD

There are five stages of chronic kidney disease. Stage 1 is the closest to healthy kidney function and Stage 5 requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.A chronic kidney disease (CKD) diagnosis may come as a surprise to many people, because the symptoms are often times subtle.

Kidney Function

In many cases, kidney damage is the result of another illness that has progressed slowly over the years. The two main causes are diabetes and high blood pressure. If your kidney disease is the result of one of these conditions, the best way to manage it is to treat the illness that is causing it.

Treatment when you’re new to kidney disease

The goal of treatment for kidney disease is to slow the progression of the disease. Each person is different and requires individual treatment. The number of doctor visits, dietary modifications and type of treatments will depend on your stage of CKD, additional health issues, weight, blood pressure and lab results..

Getting support when you’re new to kidney disease

Being diagnosed with kidney disease can bring up many emotions, such as fear, anger, anxiety, depression and helplessness. These are all-natural responses. Managing health isn’t just about the physical aspects; it’s also about emotional well-being. You may be able to find support from close friends and family.
